The Fresh Prince vs. Will Smith - Talented?

Today was my 1st day back in the office in NY, and I spent most of the day debating with my best friend about the creditability of Will Smith as a Grammy winning rapper, and whether or not he is a talented actor. Here is a summary of our arguments for you to decide:

HE SAID:
"Just because a bunch of Rich Muthafuckas who have no idea what Rap/Hip Hop music really is decide to give you an award doesn't prove shit to me. If anything it just shows how corny and "Gumball machine" your music was back in that day and time...and thats saying something . . . Like I said Will Smith is Overrated and that's my Stance. Is he talented ? Maybe. Is his talent worth 20 million a film?? HELL NO!!! Talent is not getting him 20 million a film...his personality/likeability is. If Talent got you twenty Million then someone like Edward Norton should be at the top of that list."

I SAID:
"Just because Will (Smith's) rhymes aren't in the streets or the gutter, it doesn't make him less relevant, less authentic, or less deserving of approval. None of us are from a street up bringing. If any of us rapped anything significant it wouldn't be in the streets either. If we all lay down our affinity with being hard as black men do, we might even understand other artists . . . Can you imagine what the Grammy's would say if the the rap category was full of hustler's, pimps, and goons? What would they say about us as people? You have to embrace the diversity because it is that diversity that defines us. Maybe Will Smith isn't saying the kind of things that you would say publicly because of fear of public opinon, but I know that you agree with his character."
