I grew up on the Westside of Chicago, IL next to a radio. Every Friday and Saturday I was making new mixtapes by dubbing the weekend mix shows from my lil' radio cassette player. The next day me and my cousin, Dink, were learning the lyrics and making up dances to Tribe, De La, Kid & Play, and Kool Moe. Back then I think it was Rick Party on 107.5 WGCI. He is still around today, so I'm just giving credit where credit is due.
So with these tapes, you might remember that you had to stuff tissue in the bottom to keep the recording so you wouldn't make a mistake and re-dubb over your mix again. So classic. Me and Dink would learn all these songs, and make up all these routines. I turned 10 in 1990 and threw my 1st neighborhood boy/girl party, and it was CRAZY!
It was my 10th birthday. My momma and her crew were upstairs, and I had the basement on lock. My boy David was my DJ, but all he did was slap his hands around on the stereo like he was making the beats. Me and Dink came through in our matching shirts and shoes and performed routines all night like we was really Kid & Play! It had to have been like 25-30 people in my basement, all of us dancing from those mixtapes that we made. Yo I had a SUPER high-top fade back then too! It was so many people dancing all over my house, and we was all having a good time. My father even came through to show some love too, so you know it was special.
There are things in life that drive us...either for the money or the passion. Whatever drives you, shouldn't control you. Its the age old question of money vs. happiness. Gipp Goodie, of the Goodie Mobb, once told me that "God put something inside each one of us that will take take care of us for the rest of our lives. Whatever that gift is, it will clothe you, feed you, give you housing, whatever. It may or may not make you rich, but it will take care of you." Thats real to me. So I had to look back into my heart to find what My 1st Love was. That thought took me back to the feeling I had at my 1st party while performing beside my cousin, Dink.

I remember every party that you ever had. Maybee not in exact order, but I do. If you look into the faces of every child in the photograph, one thing is consistant, joy. The memory or the idea of your first love will be different as you go from person to person, but the one thing that will remain consistant is the emotion. It will always be joy, I get that feeling everytime that I think about you.
